Zusammenfassung

Als gegen Ende der letzten Pandemie in den 90er Jahren des vorigen Jahrhunderts Richard Pfeiffer seine Arbeit über die Ätiologie der Influenza veröffentlichte, hatte er das wichtigste Problem einer die Ärzteschaft seit Jahrhunderten interessierenden Frage gelöst. Die gerade an der Grenze der Sichtbarkeit stehende Größe der Mikroorganismen und ihre, ganz besondere Anforderungen an den Nährboden stellende, schwere Züchtbarkeit gaben eine Erklärung ab für die bis dahin ohne Erfolg ausgeführten bakteriologischen Forschungen. Auf Grund der Pfeifferschen Angaben konnte dann überall der Nachweis dieser feinen, gramnegativen, streng hämoglobinophilen Bacillen erfolgreich geführt werden, und allgemein galt der Influenzabacillus als der Erreger der epidemischen Influenza.
