Zusammenfassung

Der Ausdruck Brand, der das Wesen der hier behandelten Krankheiten trefflich kennzeichnet, kommt von dem Aussehen der angegriffenen Teile, das dem dritten Stadium der Verbrennung, der Verkohlung, ähnelt. Gangrän, von γáγγϱaινa,bezeichnet zunächst ein fressendes Geschwür; es ist also eigentlich die richtige Bezeichnung für den feuchten Brand. Diese scharfe Unterscheidung ist aber in der Literatur durchaus nicht eingehalten, und man findet den Namen Gangrän für jede Art des Brandes.
