Abstract
Between 1967 and 1994 the population of Sana’a, the capital of Yemen, increased from 56,000 (Bertaud 1990) to 972,000 inhabitants (Statistical Department of Yemen 1995). The yearly growth rate was 10.8% between 1986 and 1994. At this rate, the population will have reached 3 million inhabitants by the year 2005. Sana’a’s developed area expanded from 20.9 km2 in 1979 to 94.5 km2 in 1994. About 110 km2 were planned for new urban quarters in 1995.
