Input and Output of Airborne Aggressive Substances on Green Roofs in Karlsruhe

  • Chapter
Urban Ecology

Abstract

The run-off from roofs is one of the sources of diffuse input of airborne aggressive substances into water. In the event of precipitation, dust and aerosols are discharged together with the suspensoids of the atmosphere and can be transported by the sewer system into the receiving stream. However, suspensoids which are accumulated on vegetation or on the roof material as a dry deposit will be washed into the substrate, the filter layer and the drain layer of the roof when it rains. This causes a delay or even diminishes the suspensoid run-off. Considering these circumstances, a balance of the input and output of airborne heavy metals for green roofs was performed.
