Abstract
Over the past five years, a process of structural transformation has been underway in eastern Germany. One element of this is the development of large shopping centres and commercial estates in the suburban areas of cities. The construction of these greenfield commercial estates is accompanied by large-scale land usage and the sealing of large areas, making them impermeable, as well as effects on the micro-climate, the generation of additional motorised traffic, increased vehicle emissions, and changes to the immissions’ situation with respect to atmospheric pollutants typical of exhaust emissions (Enquete-Commission 1994).
