Effect of Ergotamine Tartrate on Extracranial Cerebral Vessels in Migraine. A Doppler Ultrasound Study

Abstract

Ergot alkaloids and related compounds are still widely used in migraine treatment. They are thought to influence the phasic changes of the cranial and cerebral arteries during a migraine attack. Research in recent years has focused on their interactions with biogenic amines like serotonin and catecholamines concerning storage and receptor sites [3–5,8,12,14,18,24,28,31,36,37]. Variable responses in different parts of the vascular system were found in animals, as Wolff [42] already had postulated for the cranial and cerebral arteries in man. Therefore, we measured hemodynamic effects in the internal and external carotid artery, noninvasively, by means of Doppler ultrasound following oral administration of ergotamine tartrate.
