Ant Nests as Accelerators of Succession in Paraguayan Pastures

Abstract

Certain pasture areas in the South American Gran Chaco convert rapidly into woodlands. Nests of the leaf cutting ant, Atta vollenweideri, which occur in these pastures, have an accelerating effect on succession. In addition, certain land use partices seem to cause increased nest densities and expanded distribution of ants.
