When we have chosen a measure of distance between the objects we wish to study, whether these are individuals or populations, we will next want to represent the group of objects in some way that displays their distances from one another, and which enables us to detect subgroups of objects which lie close to one another; this will lead to the detection of classes of closely-related objects among the original group, and thus to increased understanding of the set of objects we are studying. Here, we are simply trying to describe a set of objects; we want to find the clearest possible representation of the real relations between them.
