Abstract
The research was confined to Maudsley Hospital in-patients treated with ECT mainly for depressive symptoms and included every in-patient in this category, unless unco-operative (but this was rare), and the majority were well enough to be granted evening or weekend passes at some stage of treatment. Ages ranged, with two exceptions, from 18–50 years; mean age between the various groups tested from 38–46 years. Mean I. Q., as measured by the Progressive Matrices, ranged from 85–95, variances being large and homogeneous. Both age and I. Q., under these conditions, presented no obvious problems. Of the 149 patients, 37 were men and 112 women.
