The Use of Decelerators in Electron Therapy
This note concerns the production of electrons at a lower energy than the lowest at which the electron generator will operate. At Hammersmith Hospital, electrons of 8 MeV are reduced by passing them through carbon decelerators placed just beyond the vacuum window of the machine, remote from the patient. Satisfactory depth dose curves are produced in this way (Szur, Silvester and Bewley 1962). The decelerator also produces some X radiation, although the use of carbon keeps this to a minimum.
