Analytical Description of Region Boundaries and Curves

  • Chapter
Structural Pattern Recognition

Part of the book series: Springer Series in Electrophysics ((SSEP,volume 1))

Abstract

Our discussion up to now has dealt with determining regions with “uniform” properties in a picture and tracing their boundaries. The next step is to describe the shape of such regions. This may either be the end product of our process or an intermediate result in a scene analysis program. The former is often the case in the recognition of characters (including numerals, Chinese characters, etc.), waveforms, chromosomes, cells, and machine parts. For this reason shape discrimination is discussed, at least implicitly, in most papers dealing with the above subjects and the size of shape related literature is indeed immense.
