Some Experimental and Theoretical Studies on the Propagation of Longitudinal Plastic Waves in a Strain-Rate-Dependent Material

  • Chapter
Stress Waves in Anelastic Solids

Summary

A series of tests has been performed on the propagation of longitudinal plastic waves in long prestressed specimens of annealed copper. The experimental results have been compared with those calculated with the strain-rate independent equation and with the linear strain-rate dependent equation. The latter is in good general agreement with the experimental findings, while the former shows marked discrepancies, especially with the higher values of the static preloading.

In the discussion of the results some general properties are demonstrated for the asymptotic values of a plastic wave. Some quantitative differences between calculated and experimental findings are then analyzed.
