Du Bois (81) recently claimed that in an average middle European general practice, approximately 60% of the patients suffer from psychogenic functional disorders and that, therefore, they come to a practitioner with complaints he is not trained to deal with. Similar statements can be found in international literature, usually made by psychodynamically oriented authors. Rarely, if ever, do the authors indicate how they arrived at such quantifications and claims. For this reason, their assumptions have to be regarded critically.
