Abstract

It became clear, mainly in Part A of the book, that the rock mass fabric exercises a considerable influence on the mechanical characteristics and permeability of the rock mass, while the intact rock characteristics are of comparatively minor importance. On the other hand, the intact rock characteristics may usually be determined relatively quickly and at a low cost. Furthermore, core drilling is usually carried out at the beginning of an investigation programme, so intact rock samples are available at an early stage of the planning process. Indeed, these represent the reasons why relatively extensive tests on intact rock samples are undertaken in many investigation programmes.
