Zusammenfassung
Jedes der C-Atome in dem Porphyrinring bzw. in den Phyrrolringen des Chl stellt ein π-Elektron für den Aufbau der äußeren Elektronenhülle des Chl zur Verfügung. Die π-Elektronen machen Umläufe auf den geschlossenen Ringen des Chl und werden durch Lichtabsorption auf höhere π-Zustände gebracht. Das Termschema des Chl weist eine größere Mannigfaltigkeit an Termen als das Termschema von aromatischen Kohlenwasserstoffen auf, weil durch Absorption von sichtbarem und ultraviolettem Licht nicht nur π-Elektronen in höhere π-Zustände gehoben werden, sondern auch die nichtbindenden Elektronen des Sauerstoffs am C 9 des isocyklischen Ringes. Außerdem zeigen die Terme, wenn man von einem polaren Lösungsmittel zu einem nichtpolaren, extrem getrockneten Lösungsmittel übergeht, Verschiebungen, die bei den 1 ππ-Termen (ein π-Elektron des Grundzustandes wird auf einen höheren π-Zustand überführt) das entgegengesetzte Vorzeichen besitzen wie bei den 1 nπ-Termen (ein nichtbindendes n-Elektron des O-Atoms wird auf einen höheren π-Zustand befördert). Die gesamten Verhältnisse gehen aus der Abb. 14 hervor. Das linke Termschema erhält man mit extrem getrockneten Kohlenwasserstoffen. Die beiden Pfeile geben die Wellenlänge des Maximums der Absorptionsbanden an, die zu den niedrigsten 1 ππ- und 1 nπ-Termen führen. Wesentlich tiefer liegen die Triplett-Terme.
