The Nature of the Controlling Forces in the Hypnotic Relationship

  • Chapter
Psychophysiological Mechanisms of Hypnosis

Abstract

It will be remembered that psychoanalysis and the various psychotherapies involving insight into oneself all started from the use of hypnosis by Josef Breuer in Vienna to treat his now famous patient, Miss Anna O, who suffered from a severe hysterical disorder. Thus, many analysts from Freud onwards have been interested in attempting to unravel the secrets of the hypnotic state and its controlling forces (Breuer and Freud, 1895). These controlling forces, mentioned in the title of this paper, refer to the nature of the unconscious ties that exist between the hypnotist and his hypnotized subject.
