Abstract

Mammalian fertilization requires that a sperm cell penetrates the ovum investments (Fig. 1). Penetration is aided by hydrolytic enzymes from the acrosome(a modified lysosome located on the anterior portion of the sperm head). Ejaculated sperm are unable to penetrate these layers until they have undergone a functional change in the female reproductive tract, a process referred to as capaci-tation [2, 3]. We believe capacitation involves the activation, release or exposure of the sperm acrosomal hydrolytic enzymes, as well as labilization of sperm membranes.
