Colonic Polyps and Carcinoma Risk

Abstract

Carcinoma of the colon constitutes a great challenge to all physicians, for it is not only common, but — unlike many other tumors — also curable. The five-year survival rate varies between 30 and 66%, depending upon the initial extent of the lesions [3, 16, 17, 18, 22]. Early diagnosis of recto-colonic tumors should therefore be particularly rewarding, and in this connection it is naturally very important to elucidate the relation between the occurrence of polyps in the large bowel and the risk of carcinoma development.
