Abstract

By the term “Hirschsprung’s disease” we understand an aplasia of the intramural parasympathetic cells in conjuction with hyperplasia of the extramural parasympathetic and sympathetic cells, resulting in a narrow, spastic segment of bowel (Meier-Ruge). AS a consequence a megacolon develops above this narrow segment and the sphincter is affected by achalasia. Operation is the only remedy in the vast majority of cases. The aims of surgical treatment are as follows:

  1. 1.

    Regular, spontaneous defaecation and elimination of meteorism;

  2. 2.

    Complete continence;

  3. 3.

    No loss of potency in male patients.
