Photochemical formation and photolysis of 1,2-ethanediols

Abstract

The simplest example is the photosynthesis of pinacol (2,3-dimethyl-2,3-butanediol, 1) itself from acetone and 2-propanol; this was initially investigated by Ciamician and Silber [1] and later by Schenck [2], Further examples are the formation of benzopinacol (tetraphenyl-l,2-ethanediol, 2) from benzhydrol and benzophenone [3] and of triphenyl-l,2-ethanediol (3) from benzyl alcohol and benzophenone [4]. The formation of 2 may, however, proceed by a more complicated way [5] than by simple addition.
