Cycloaddition of alkenes or alkynes to other alkenes or aromatic nuclei leading to the formation of four-membered rings

  • Chapter
Preparative Organic Photochemistry

Abstract

The photodimerisation of unsaturated aliphatic compounds leading to the formation of cyclobutane derivatives has already been considered in chapter 8. Reactions of this type are among the earliest known photochemical reactions. In contrast photoreactions between two different unsaturated molecules are a relatively late discovery but, in recent years, a large number of such reactions have been described. The literature has been reviewed by inter alia, Schenck [1] and by Corey [2], A recent account has been given by Steinmetz [3].
