Zu diesem Zweck müssen ihnen ständig beträchtliche Mengen an Energie zugeführt werden. Energie ist ganz allgemein die Fähigkeit, Arbeit zu leisten; sie tritt in verschiedenen Formen auf (mechanische, elektrische, chemische und Wärmeenergie). Unter idealen Bedingungen können Energieformen ineinander übergeführt werden.
