Abstract

Although the sensitivity of ovarian cancer to chemotherapeutic agents has been demonstrated frequently (Frick et al., 1965; Masterson and Nelson, 1965; Parker and Shingleton, 1962; Wiltshaw, 1965), clinicians have been slow to utilize this type of treatment for patients with advanced inoperable disease. At one time we shared this reluctance but, because there was no satisfactory therapeutic method for these patients, about 5 years ago we began gingerly to use chemotherapy for our advanced inoperable ovarian cancer patients. As our experience increased, we were impressed by the benefits obtained and the lack of toxicity attendant on the agent we were using. We have recently reviewed the case histories of patients treated with this agent to determine statistically whether our clinical impressions were valid.
