Abstract

The multi-step and multi-photon excitation of the high-lying vibrational and electronic states of molecules using intense laser radiation open up many new possibilities in photochemistry. In Chaps.6 and 7 consideration was given to a rather obvious application of these methods, i.e., the separation and detection of atoms and molecules. We shall not discuss the more complex situation, in which intense laser light inateracts nonlinearly with complex molecules in the gas and liquid phase, in detail. But, in my opinion, it is in this region that the most promising and unexpected applications lie. This field of laser chemistry is still not clearly understood. Nevertheless, interesting results have been obtained in at least two directions which shall be discussed in this chapter.
