Abstract

The standard device for the measurement of the absolute temperature is the gas thermometer. Temperatures in the whole region from 1 K up to the melting point of gold have been measured using this thermometer. During the last years the accuracy could be considerably increased and surprising results have been obtained. GUILDNER [1], for example, at the NBS has redetermined the boiling point of water to be 99,975 degrees, instead of the previously adopted value of 100 degrees, which indicates the possibility of systematic error in much of the earlier work. The source of this error is the adsorption of gas by the walls of the thermometer bulb, which depends on pressure and temperature.
