Early Diagnosis and its Importance for Prognosis and Therapy

  • Chapter
New Trends in the Treatment of Cancer

Abstract

As with few other diseases, the early diagnosis of cancer determines the course of the disease and the prospect of cure. Only with detection and treatment at a time when the cell degeneration is localized is the prospect for complete cure good by radical operation or radiotherapy. If the disease process becomes generalized or begins as a generalized or systemic process, cure can hardly ever be achieved and treatment can only retard the course of the disease and make the rest of the patient’s life more bearable. Therefore the physician must make every effort to diagnose a malignant disease at the earliest possible moment.
