Abstract
In the last few years many analogues of purine and pyrimidine bases were discovered which are incorporated into nucleic acids. This incorporation results in remarkable changes in the biological activity of the abnormal RNA’s. As a consequence of these changes in the genetic material, the protein synthesizing capacity of the cell is affected. For example, it was observed that if the synthesis of TMV occurs in the presence of 5-fluorouracil, more than half of the uracil normally present in the TMV-RNA may be replaced by FU [1]. This substitution leads to mutations, probably because FU is occasionally read as C and not as U.
