Genetic Control of Translation of Nonsense Triplets

Abstract

The genetic code, shown in Table 1, designates the relationships between the 64 possible codons present in messenger RNA and the 20 amino acids present in proteins. The triplet nature of this code, which provides a potential surplus of codons for 20 amino acids, requires that the code contain degenerate codons (i.e. different triplets coding for the same amino acids) or nonsense triplets (i.e. triplets which do not code for any amino acid), or both.
