New Clues to Atmospheric Heating Processes in Luminous Cool Stars

Abstract

New spectroscopic and photometric observations of luminous cool stars enable us to identify and map out the presence of various heating mechanisms in the color-magnitude diagram. Low mass stars on the main sequence show clear magnetic dynamo activity. As a star evolves off the main sequence and moves toward the supergiant region, or across and up the red giant branch, observations suggest that non-magnetic heating processes occur and eventually dominate in the atmospheres of giant and supergiant stars. The coolest and most luminous stars may have pure hy-drodynamic chromospheres. Hybrid giant and supergiant stars appear to provide the link between the magnetically-dominated atmosphere and the hydrodynamic chromosphere.
