Observations of Waves and Oscillations

  • Conference paper

Abstract

Phase relations between velocity and brightness fluctuations observed in spectral lines in the visible are utilized both to diagnose the dynamical state of the solar atmosphere, and to examine the various oscillatory motions as potential carriers of mechanical energy dissipated in the upper layers. After a presentation of recent improvements of the diagnostic techniques, acoustic waves in the upper photosphere and resonant oscillations in the chromosphere are reviewed in the heating context. Modifications of the phase relations in the presence of localized magnetic fields are discussed, and a heating process operating at the footpoints of magnetic canopies is suggested.
