Abstract

The insects, in contrast to amphibians and echinoderms, annelids and molluscs, have only recently come under the scrutiny of developmental physiologists. But today in a very broad area of development they present excellent examples for the interplay of developmental principles, from embryonic development to the relatively late pattern formation in the imaginal discs in metamorphosis and the hormonal control of the events in metamorphosis.
