Zusammenfassung

Lähmungen wohl poliomyelitischer Natur waren schon im Altertum bekannt. Auf einer Säule der 18. ägyptischen Dynastie (etwa 1500 Jahre v.Chr.) ist ein opfernder Priester dargestellt mit einer Atrophie und Verkürzung des Unterschenkels, wie sie nur bei einer im Kindesalter aquirierten poliomyelitischen Lähmung Zustandekommen kann.
