Outer Shell Excitation During Sputtering and Low Energy Ion Scattering

Abstract

The general area of photon emission resulting from the excitation of atomic particles during ion surface interaction was reviewed at the first of these meetings [1]. The more specific aspects of excitation leading to photon emission from sputtered particles were reviewed by Thomas at the second workshop in this series [2]. It is not therefore our intention to once more review the field in general but rather to concentrate on developments since this last review. This means that we will be concerned primarily with the work of only a few groups, since these have been most active in this area in the last two years. We will attempt to present this work in such a way that it highlights our knowledge and understanding of the excitation and other processes contributing to the observed decay by photon emission. The aim of this review will be primarily to highlight what we need to know, and what we ought to measure, rather than to describe in detail what has been measured in the past.
