Summary

In 10 patients with fibromyalgia the influence of whole-body cryo-therapy on spontaneous pain, pressure pain at so-called “tender points”, and on vegetative and functional symptoms, as well as the quality of sleep, sensitivity, and anxiety were examined.

In six out of these 10 patients a clear pain-relief was obtained, lasting until 4 weeks after the therapy, but in comparison with a control group which had the same treatment except for cryo-therapy, this effect was not significant. Neither improvement in the mood scale (von Zerssen’s) nor in the auxiery scale (Erlanger’s) were significant in comparison with a control group, whereas improvement in vegetative and functional symptoms, as well as quality of sleep was significant when compared with controls.

It is assumed that cryo-therapy effects a relaxation of tense muscles, intensifies blood circulation in deeper skin layers or muscles, and perhaps influences pain mediators, like serotonin. Whether there are some individual factors that play a role in some of the extremely strong response to whole-body cryo-therapy, seen in some cases (“Responders”), remains unclear.
