Abstract

When Charles Darwin (1872) proposed the then revolutionary idea of evolution by natural selection, he had no clear understanding of genetics. This is all the more remarkable because evolution is nothing but the consequence of continuous accumulation of genetic changes within the genome, and natural selection operates only because individuals which comprise a population invariably display some degree of genetic diversity.
