A Model for the Development of the Seve-Köli Caledonian Nappe Complex

  • Chapter
Energetics of Geological Processes

Abstract

Structures and metamorphic features are described from the Seve-Köli nappe complex, and an interpretation of their history is presented.

The nappes have undergone intense ductile deformation during their emplacement with the result that earlier foliations are completely transposed into the orientation of the thrust planes, and earlier fold axes have been rotated into approximate parallelism with the direction of thrusting. The latter is parallel to a stretching lineation and to tubular folds and is perpendicular to the trend of the Caledonian Orogen. It is argued that the nappes were emplaced by flow under the influence of gravity, after considerable crustal thickening was achieved by continental collision.
