Gibberellins in the Rest Period of the Potato Tuber

  • Chapter
Eigenschaften und Wirkungen der Gibberelline

Abstract

Although gibberellin A3 has been shown to shorten the rest period of a number of seeds, shrubs, tubers and trees [1, 6, 8, 12, 22] the physiological role of native gibberellins is not yet understood. Rest in this sense refers to growth that is slowed or arrested, even though conditions are optimal for growth. After the rest period, growth is accelerated or renewed if environmental conditions are suitable [7]. The rest period of the potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) tuber, usually measured from harvest, lasts 5 to 17 weeks, depending on age, variety, and to a small extent on storage temperature [7]. Actually, this period could be measured from the time of tuber enlargement, except for the obvious difficulty in judging when enlargement begins. Rosa [24] clearly showed that the sooner the tuber is harvested after enlargement begins, the longer is its rest period.
