Lunar Eclipses

  • Chapter

Abstract

The geometrical conditions of a lunar eclipse are given by the two cones formed through the common tangents interior and exterior to the Sun and the Earth (Fig. 1.1.1). At the distance of the Moon these cones give with the plane normal to the axis Sun-Earth two circular intersections named the penumbra and the umbra.
