The Role of Endoscopic Ultrasonography in Preoperative Staging of Esophagus Malignancy

Diseases of the Esophagus

Abstract

Endoscopy is accurate for the detection and diagnosis of intramural esophageal malignancy. The depth of infiltration, however, cannot adequately be assessed. Conventional ultrasonography is inadequate in detecting and staging of esophageal abnormalities because of bony and pulmonary structures. Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) based on the combination of endoscopy and ultrasonography has been developed to improve diagnostic accuracy by approaching the target lesion as close as possible via the gastrointestinal lumen [1–8]. The purpose of this study was to assess prospectively the accuracy and limitations of this new diagnostic technique in detecting and staging esophageal malignancy.
