Esophageal Diverticula

Diseases of the Esophagus

Part of the book series: Handbuch der inneren Medizin ((INNEREN 5,volume 3))

Abstract

Esophageal diverticula are localized projections of the lumen of the gullet. They are distinguished from pseudo- or functional diverticula by the fact that the sacculation of the wall has a constant localization and is limited to a relatively small part of the esophageal circumference. Pseudodiverticula, however, are more or less circular protrusions of the esophageal wall, which are localized between two contraction rings and have a variable location.
