Zusammenfassung
Die Atmung stellt eine elementare Voraussetzung des menschlichen Lebens dar. Ohne die laufende Versorgung des Organismus mit Sauerstoff und die Intaktheit sämtlicher Atmungssysteme können die Lebensvorgänge nicht erhalten werden, denn zur Erhaltung von Struktur und Funktion der Gewebe und Zellen ist die dauernde Lieferung von Energie notwendig. Diese Energien werden im Verlauf der Zellatmung durch die biologischen Oxydationen gebildet. Atmung und Assimilation sind die beiden Grundvorgänge, welche das Leben auf der Erde überhaupt erst ermöglichen. Beide Vorgänge werden von den zwei wichtigsten Naturfarbstoffen, welche chemisch eng verwandt sind, entscheidend beherrscht. Für die Assimilation ist der grüne Blattfarbstoff, das Chlorophyll und für die Dissimilation der rote Blutfarbstoff, das Hämoglobin bzw. seine chemischen Verwandten in jeder Zelle, die Häminfermente, verantwortlich.
