Leukocyte Separation on the Basis of their Receptors for Biogenic Amines and Prostaglandins: Relation of the Receptor to Antibody Formation
In the previous chapter (Bourne et al., 1973), the effects of biogenic amines and the E series prostaglandins on various immunologic processes were discussed. All stimulators of cyclic AMP accumulation in leukocytes appeared to inhibit at least three separate immunologic events. Histamine, beta catecholamines, and prostaglandin E1 and E2 inhibited IgE-induced release of histamine and other mediators of the inflammatory process from basophils and mast cells. The same drugs also inhibited lysis of allogeneic target cells (Henney et al., 1972) by sensitized lymphocytes, and they inhibited release of antibody from the splenic lymphocytes of mice immunized with sheep erythrocytes (Melmon et al., 1973a).
