Abstract

Many physical characteristics of continuously distributed matter are local in the sense that they pertain to individual material points and their immediate neighborhoods, rather than to a body as a whole. Examples of such local characteristics are: elastic response, viscosity, heat capacity, electrical conductivity, magnetic response, optical refraction, chemical composition, color.
