Operative Synovectomy has always been the subject of extremely changing popularity. It will celebrate its 100th birthday in 1977, because Volkmann was probably the first perfoming synovectomy on a tuberculous knee joint in 1877. Synovectomy of inflamed rheumatic knee joints became more widespread in Germany at the end of the 19th century (Schüller, Müller), in France (Mignon) at the turn of the century and in the USA during the first decades of the twentieth century (Goldwaith, Murphy). The less purposeful selection of patients, a rather traumatizing operation technique and non-systematic after-treatment were probably the major reasons for the somewhat pessimistic assessment of the value of this operation (Sweet, Ghormley and Cameron, Henderson, Allison and Coonse, Speed, Jones, Steindler, Boon-Itt) which more or less fell into oblivion again about twenty years ago.
