Abstract
The substances called cardiac glycosides increase the contractility and contractile velocity of the healthy and the failing heart. For the therapy of heart failure, ouabain (hardly used anymore), the digitalis glycosides (digoxin, digitoxin) and some scilla glycosides (proscillarin, meproscillar-in) are used.
