Water Relations: Short-Term Water Balance

Because small animals have relatively high surface-area: volume ratios they risk rapid desiccation in dry air. Nevertheless, many invertebrates, expecially arthropods, have successfully colonized arid environments. This apparent paradox has for many years intrigued biologists, who continue to investigate its ecological and physicochemical basis.
