Abstract
The “virus-free” renal adenocarcinoma (Lucké tumor) of the frog has been shown by Mizell et al. (1) to develop herpes-type virus (HTV) when the tumor-bearing frogs are maintained at 7–8°C for several months. Tweedell (2) has shown that kidney tumors can be induced in frog embryos by HTV-positive tumor filtrates and subcellular fractions obtained by the differential centrifugation of tumor homogenates. We have fractionated several of these cold-treated tumors utilizing sucrose gradient zonal centrifugation followed by isopycnic banding of the virus zones for further purification. This report presents the results of these fractionation studies.
