Abstract

The pioneering work of W. H. Smith and others such as the Orskovs, more than fifteen years ago, indicated the relevance of plasmids to the pathogenesis of bacterial diseases (1). They were able to show the involvement of plasmid genes in the ability of E.coli to adhere and produce toxins in the intestine, and the role of the ColV plasmid in the ability of bacteria to produce extraintestinal infection in animals, and probably in humans (2). Since those days many different plasmid encoded properties have been recognized as virulence factors in bacteria.
