Let R be a normed linear space of elements f, g, ... over the field of real or complex numbers, and let the symbol ||f|| denote the norm of f. In addition, let V be a finite dimensional linear subspace of R. The general linear approximation problem is as follows:

For a given fR determine an element gV such that
$$||g - f|| \leqq ||h - f||$$
for all hV.
