Abstract
A method for the determination of the hydrostatic pressure in the glomerular capillaries of the rat kidney has been devised in our laboratory. The information thus obtained comes to fill the gap in the existing knowledge on this aspect of renal physiology. The glomerular capillary pressure has been calculated by several investigators in the past (1, 2, 3). Values ranging from 55–70 mm Hg were reported. We have determined the glomerular capillary pressure in the rat kidney by measuring the stop-flow pressure in the first loop of the proximal convolution (5–10% of its length) and in BOWMAN’S capsule of individual nephrons. This method enabled us to study the relation of the pressure in the glomerular capillaries to the arterial blood pressure and the pressure drop along the afferent arterioles.
